Prayer Letter March - May 2009
June 15, 2009
Dear friends and family,
It is hard to believe that we have now been in Peru for over two months. There is much going on, but we are excited about the opportunity of serving God here. Melissa and I have been in language school for nine weeks now. I have had to review a couple of weeks of lessons. We are praying that God will give us the grace and understanding to be able to learn the language and then put it into practice. Melissa is also teaching a group of nine children each morning. There are four American children and five Peruvians. The Peruvian children’s parents want them to learn English. It has been a challenge for Melissa to teach English to Spanish speaking boys and girls when she does not know Spanish.
Our family is adjusting well to life in Peru. We are blessed to be working with other Americans and many Peruvians who are more than willing to help us in any way possible to adjust. We have not had any health issues, other than I was bit by a spider on the forehead. It caused a big knot and quite a bit of swelling around my eyes. Needless to say, I was the talk of the campus for about a week. I was able to go to the doctor and get some antibiotics which took care of the problem. My doctor’s visit and the medicine cost less than twenty US dollars!
We are still in the process of building our home. It will be a few more months before we complete it. We have been blessed by several churches who have helped us financially with the needs for the home. It is winter time now and very humid. The men are working on the roof right now. It will be cement. It will take a few weeks for the cement to dry. The roof is several inches thick.
In May the church celebrated it’s 32nd anniversary. There were over 300 people here on that Sunday. It was neat to see the church packed full of both deaf and hearing. There is much that needs to be done for Christ here in Lima and beyond. Our desire is to have a training center up and running as soon as possible. It would be great if by this time next year to have one running. We need to learn Spanish and get totally settled in, then we will jump full time into the ministry of training men to go out and start deaf and hearing ministries in Peru and beyond.
Thank you for all your prayers and support. God is using you in our lives!
In Christ,
Cory, Melissa, Amanda, Elaina, and Olivia Ricker
